Sound Engineering

After having to deal with sound reinforcement and rudimentary recording for years while learning how to produce events I decided I needed to get a solid footing in sound engineering and signed up for audio school in 2005.

In 2007 I graduated with a Recording Arts degree from Middlesex University, through SAE Cologne and SAE Byron Bay. I (and the places I worked at) greatly benefited from that education as for many years after I was the person responsible for how services and events sounded. I also did a lot of post mixing, especially of live recordings once multitrack recording became affordable and commonplace.

The audio work I did over the years included training audio engineers in several places, most extensively at Tenth Church in Vancouver. In addition to samples of my audio work on this page, check out the Together We Sing video from my time at King Road Church — while I produced the event, arranged the music, and played piano for the show I also did the audio and video post. Harold Wiens of Sapphire mixed FoH and did the audio tracking.

The audio clips below are miscellaneous sessions I recorded and mixed. They include a demo recording for The Vue, an Australian rock band, a live recording from a Sunday morning service at Willow Creek Community Church (Chicago area), a track from a Christmas concert I produced in Germany, and more. The Bach prelude I played, recorded, as well as mixed. The Unger Girls clip is of some of my piano students singing, which I tracked in their living room.
